They were a striving indie band until their song Bruises appeared, first on an Apple ad and then everywhere. How do you escape the shadow of a hit? I nspiration lurks in the strangest places. Just ask New York duo Chairlift, who owe much of their new record to the sight of a gorilla-chested Sean Connery leaping around an Irish hillside in a red mankini. We must have played it on silent times while making this record. By , though, they had become the reluctant poster kids for a popular wave of twee indie thanks to a ubiquitous Apple iPod Nano advert, which featured the cutesy bounce of their breakout song Bruises. As they gazed out on billboards in oversized sweaters and faded denims, it was easy to dismiss them as just a fashion band with great cheekbones. But their new-found recognition was a misleading calling card for what the band was about. The pair dusted her self-titled LP with atmospheric haze on the track No Angel, joining fellow Brooklyners Dev Hynes, Dirty Projectors and Grizzly Bear in an elite bracket of Knowles dynasty-approved underground artists blurring the borders between the mainstream and its fringes. The album is indebted to and inspired by New York and soaks up the myriad influences that come from living in a modern multicultural city.
Bruises Lyrics Resonate Throughout the Song
I tried to do handstands for you I tried to do headstands for you Everytime I fell you on yeah everytime I fell I tried to do handstands for you But everytime I fell for you I'm permanently black and blue permanently blue for you. I tried to do handstands for you I tried to do headstands for you Everytime I fell on you yeah everytime I fell I tried to do handstands But everytime I fell for you I'm permanently black and blue permanently blue for You-ooo So black and blue-oooo For you-ooo I grabbed some frozen strawberries so I could ice your bruisy knees But frozen things they all unfreeze and now I taste like. All those frozen strawberries I used to chill your bruisy knees Hot July ain't good to me. I got bruises on my knees for you And grass stains on my knees for you Got holes in my new jeans for you. Got pink and black and blue Got bruises on my knees for you And grass stains on my knees for you Got holes in my new jeans for you Got pink and black and blue for You-ooo So black and blue-ooo For you-oooo
